This image was made during a weekend trip to Venice with the intention of spending some time at the Biennale. Even being in company of some friends, as usual I ended up spending a lot of time during the night shooting when streets were completely empty.
I was very busy making an image of San Giorgio di Maggiore with gondolas from Saint Mark Square when I noticed a good friend looking at this canal. The last thing I expected to see was a prison in Venice.
Venice prison is called Piombi, and it is a former prison in the Doge’s Palace. The view from The Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts used to see before their imprisonment.
There is a local legend that lovers will be granted eternal love and bliss if they kiss on a gondola at sunset under the Bridge of Sighs as the bells of St Mark’s Campanile ring.
