The calm of Lake Lucerne, silhouetted by the surrounding mountains, is both disturbed and yet enhanced by the light of the lunar halo. It feels like something or somebody is behind the moon and watching over the lake.

There are many things amazing in nature, and a lunar halo ranks highly amongst them. For lunar halos to occur requires quite a bit of luck. Making this particular photo required a lot of that luck.

Geeky Stuff:

A lunar halo requires a variety of weather and astronomical conditions to be visible:

  1. The Moon needs to be either a full Moon or very close to being full.
  2. The Moon should be low in the sky.
  3. It’s a personal phenomenon. You need ice crystals clouds on the upper atmosphere positioned between you and the moon to make a lunar halo visible to you.
